Growing up in the Portland suburb of Beaverton, I was always interested in and would notice
plants, especially their color and form. I never realized my zeal for plant material was
stronger than other people's until several years after college. Studying Biochemistry at Azusa
Pacific University did not uncover this passion, nor did working as a sales representative for
just about every company in Los Angeles. It wasn't until I moved back to the Portland area, ten
years after college, and quit my sales position that I started to take stock of my giftings and
passions in life. As I worked as a teacher's aide in the Beaverton School District I decided that
summers were best spent working in the sunshine and outdoors so I contacted local landscapers
to see if I could help mow lawns or pull weeds. I ended up working as a sort of "quality control"
manager for a local landscaper. This work allowed me to see many, many residential yards and
neighborhoods and to notice what plants and design elements contributed to the nicer yards
and what detracted from other yards. As soon as I could raise some capital I started my own
landscape design business by teaching myself how to do things like draw a yard to scale, assess
and identify current plant material, and learning all sorts of botanical names. It's been a
wonderful journey and my work makes me extremely pleased with life. I hope to share a bit of
my passion with my clients and sow it into their yards and lives.
